“12-up” describes twelve label positions on one flat sheet, not a tooling type or a rotary process. A useful layout does more than fit twelve outlines into a rectangle. It accounts for the feed edge, the waste path between shapes, the required cut and the way the finished sheet will move after cutting. When ordering a sheet-fed label cutting die, the complete sheet plan is as important as the single label outline.
Build twelve positions from one master label
Start with one approved contour, including its dimensions and corner transitions. Repeat that source as a 3 × 4, 2 × 6 or staggered layout according to the shape. Oval labels may nest, while directional artwork can rule out rotating a position. The goal is not the tightest drawing; it is a stable sheet on which all twelve labels can be cut and separated in the same way.
Separate raw sheet size from usable area
The purchased sheet is not automatically the area available to the die. Feed edge, side reference, press marks and final trim zones must be marked first. If twelve positions do not fit comfortably, review orientation, row count or sheet choice instead of quietly changing the finished label size.
A 3 × 4 grid may shorten the feed direction, while a 2 × 6 arrangement can use a long edge more effectively. The real cutting area of the intended line—not a margin copied from another job—must decide between them.
Treat label spacing as the waste path
The gap between labels is also the bridge that keeps surrounding waste under control. A bridge that is too narrow can split during transport or removal; an unnecessarily wide gap increases material loss on every sheet. Concave edges, pointed details and opposing narrow shapes need more attention than long straight sides.
For kiss-cut work, state how the liner and waste matrix must remain. For through-cut work, state how pieces will be held, collected or separated. Spacing cannot be judged properly until that downstream action is known.
Approve the master contour before duplication
Dimensions, cut type, corner form and orientation belong to one source contour. All other positions are generated from it. If artwork is already imposed, overlay the cut path on every position. If it is not, issue the approved die layout as the prepress reference. This prevents a change made to the first label from being missed on the other eleven.
Do not reduce waste to one percentage
Record perimeter trim, material between labels, trial sheets and pieces rejected because separation was unstable. A dense layout can reduce theoretical area loss while increasing broken matrix or mixed parts. Compare accepted labels per usable sheet and the reliability of waste removal, not only the number of outlines on screen.
A sheet trial must check every region
Peeling one label from the centre proves very little. Corner, edge and centre positions should produce the same result. Mark the approved sample with stock, sheet direction and layout revision so a repeat order refers to a physical result rather than the vague instruction “same 12-up die.”
- Do corner, edge and centre positions match in dimensions and edge quality?
- Does every position follow the approved orientation plan?
- Does the waste frame release in the intended direction without breaking apart?
- For kiss-cut work, does the liner remain usable; for through-cut work, do pieces release fully?
- Can the cut sheet move and stack without loose parts?
