The file does not need to be perfect; the useful part is making cut, crease and reference lines clear enough for the workshop to read.

Usable file types

PDF, AI, DXF, technical drawings, measured images or simple sketches can be used for a first quote. If there is no drawing, width, height, depth and substrate information can start the discussion.

Vector files make the line work faster to read. Image-based requests need clear dimensions and material notes.

  • PDF or AI explains print layout.
  • DXF helps read the cutting path.
  • Sketches need dimensions and material notes.

Separate cut, crease and perforation lines

When every line uses the same color, production interpretation becomes harder. Cut lines, creases, perforations, kiss cuts and references are easier to review when separated by color or layer.

Simple layer names such as cut, crease, perforation and reference reduce back-and-forth during quoting and production.

  • Cut lines are kept unambiguous.
  • Creases should not look like cuts.
  • Reference text should not become production geometry.

Scale and dimension control

If the file opens at the wrong scale, the die cannot be produced correctly. Add at least one real control dimension such as outer width, outer height or a critical flap size.

For photo-based requests, a ruler or the existing product in the same frame helps the workshop understand the scale.

  • Add at least one control dimension.
  • Millimeters are stated clearly.
  • Old and new revisions are kept separate.

How to write the WhatsApp message

The file is more useful when it is shared with the intended use. The same line work can be interpreted differently for carton, label, gasket or another substrate.

The fastest flow is: file, material, quantity, machine or use case, and delivery expectation. Those five details usually make the first quote possible.

  • Confirm that the file is the final revision.
  • Material and quantity are written.
  • Add the delivery expectation at the end.

Quote details we clarify together

When the file, material, quantity and deadline are clear, the quote conversation moves faster and with less back-and-forth.

  • Current revision file
  • Material and quantity details
  • Critical dimensions or production notes
  • Deadline expectation and delivery preference
