Repeatable outer-contour cutting after forming

Thermoform trim and vacuum form cutting dies

This service does not form a flat PVC or PET sheet. It removes the production flange from a vacuum-formed component along a repeatable outer contour. Part seating, locating references and resistance to deformation during cutting are resolved together.

What is a trim die used for?

Vacuum forming leaves a broad process flange around the shaped part. A trim die removes that excess at the required outer size. Unlike a hang hole in a blister card or cutting a flat sheet, the central issue is how a three-dimensional component seats before the cut.

  • Clear PET product trays
  • PVC and PET vacuum-formed covers
  • Thermoformed transport separators
  • Formed components requiring a regular edge

How is the trim line derived from a sample?

The free part is measured first, followed by its seating surface and flange width. Since thermoformed components can vary slightly between cycles, one corner measurement is not simply copied around the entire perimeter.

  • Measurements at multiple references
  • Corner radius and flange width
  • Part orientation in the tool
  • Required finished outer dimensions

What information is needed before quoting?

A physical sample is the safest starting point. If no sample exists, provide measured top and side drawings, material type, approximate thickness and the flange that must remain after trimming.

  • Physical thermoformed sample
  • PVC, PET or other material
  • Approximate thickness and part height
  • Finished size and acceptable flange

Frequently asked questions

1Is this a vacuum forming mould service?

No. This page covers the trim die that cuts the perimeter of an already formed component.

2Can the die be made from photographs alone?

Photographs support pre-assessment, but physical seating and flange dimensions require a sample or dependable technical data.

3Can the same tool cut PVC and PET?

Even with identical geometry, thickness and cutting behaviour can differ; suitability is assessed with the material specification.
