A barcode cutting rule is the accepted name for the steel rule used in barcode and label cutting. Two dimensions define it: a 12 mm rule height and 1.5 point thickness. The trade shortens this to “a 12” — that number is the height, not a count of labels on a sheet. On a label cutting die order, the distinction decides how the tool is built.
The two defining dimensions: 12 mm height, 1.5 point
Two dimensions describe a barcode cutting rule. Height is how far the steel rule stands above the plywood, and on this rule it is 12 mm; it governs which material is cut, at what depth and with which ejection rubber. Once the rule is seated in the plywood the height cannot be changed.
Point is the thickness, and on this rule it is 1.5 point. The point scale is quoted in millimetres in the market: 2 point is 0.71 mm, 3 point is 1.07 mm, 4 point is 1.42 mm. On the same scale 1.5 point works out to roughly 0.53 mm. A thin point lets contours sit closer together on narrow barcode labels.

Names for the same rule
The same product is requested under different names from one workshop to the next, and they all mean one thing. Whichever you use, writing the dimensions beside it is enough.
- Barcode rule — the everyday short form.
- A 12, or “12'lik” in Turkish workshops — shorthand taken from the height.
- Barcode label cutting rule — the application-led name.
- 12 mm cutting rule — naming the product straight from its height.
- 1.5 point rule — naming it by thickness, usually once the height is already agreed.
The one name to keep separate is “barcode cutting die”. The die is the whole tool with the rule seated in plywood; the rule is one part of it.
Why “12” is a height and not a quantity
Requests often arrive as “12 labels”, which reads like a piece count. There is no established definition of “twelve labels” as a tooling term; the number gives the height of the steel rule.
The distinction is expensive on the tooling side: a misread “12” is not a revision but a new die. Writing “barcode cutting rule, 12 mm height” on the order means nobody has to guess whether a count or a measurement was asked for.
Titanium edge coating where it is needed
On some jobs the cutting edge is requested with a titanium coating. The subject is edge wear: the purpose of the coating is to help the edge hold its sharpness longer.
It is not required on every job, and it is not a guarantee of life or tolerance. The decision cannot be made without knowing the material, the run length and the repeat-work expectation, so a coating request is discussed as its own line in the quotation.
What it gets confused with
The most common confusion is height versus thickness. “12” is the height and “1.5” is the thickness; when both appear in one sentence, state in words which is which.
The second is “12 lanes”. In roll label production a lane is a label track running side by side across the web, and that belongs to roll-to-roll lines, flexible dies and magnetic cylinder setups. What has to be settled for a quotation
What makes a barcode cutting rule request producible is a short set of dimensions.
- Material and its thickness: face stock, liner, any varnish or lamination
- Cut type: through cut or kiss cut?
- Requested rule height and point thickness (for example 12 mm / 1.5 point)
- Is a titanium edge coating wanted?
- Dimensioned vector contour and the actual sheet size
- Run length and repeat-work expectation
