A useful layout does more than fit outlines into a rectangle. It accounts for the feed edge, the waste path between shapes, the required cut and the way the finished sheet will move after cutting. When ordering a sheet-fed label cutting die, the complete sheet plan is as important as the single label outline.
Build every position from one master label
Start with one approved contour, including its dimensions and corner transitions. Repeat that source as a row-and-column or staggered layout according to the shape. Oval labels may nest, while directional artwork can rule out rotating a position. The goal is not the tightest drawing; it is a stable sheet on which every label can be cut and separated in the same way.
Separate the raw sheet from the usable area
The sheet size the printer supplies may not equal the area the die can fill. Feed edge, side reference, print control marks and final trim zones go into the plan first. If the positions do not fit that frame comfortably, reconsider orientation, row count or the sheet option instead of changing the label size.
A layout fed from the short edge and one that uses the long edge better do not produce the same result. The right decision comes from seeing the real usable area of the line that will cut the job; an edge margin copied from another job is not a reliable reference.
Read label spacing as a waste path
The area between two labels is not empty space but the bridge that carries the waste left after cutting. A bridge that is too narrow can break during feeding or stripping, while an unnecessarily wide gap grows the unused area on every sheet. Concave transitions, sharp protrusions and narrow facing regions behave differently from straight edges.
In kiss-cut work, how the liner and the waste frame will remain must be written down in advance; in through cutting, how the parts will be held and collected. Without knowing the movement after the cut, the right spacing cannot be chosen by looking between contours alone.
Verify the master contour, then repeat it
Dimensions, cut type, corner form and direction mark are approved in one source, and the remaining positions are generated from it. If the print imposition is ready, the cut line is laid over every position individually. If the imposition has not been made yet, the approved die layout becomes the reference for prepress. That way small differences corrected only in the first position do not travel into production.
Do not compress waste into a single percentage
Outer-edge waste, the waste between labels, trial sheets and parts rejected for unstable separation should be recorded separately. A tight layout spends little area in the drawing while raising the count of broken matrix or mixed parts in production. Two options are compared on net accepted labels and the stripping plan, not only on how many labels fit the sheet.
A sheet trial must test every position
Separating a single label from the centre is not enough. If corner, edge and middle positions do not return the same result, the problem may lie in the cutting behaviour across the sheet rather than in the master form. When the approved trial records material, sheet direction and layout version, a repeat order stops depending on a vague “same die” note.
- Do corner, edge and centre positions come out to the same dimension with a clean edge?
- Does every position follow the approved orientation plan?
- Does the waste frame separate in the intended direction without breaking up?
- In kiss cut, does the liner stay usable; in through cut, do the parts separate completely?
- Can the cut sheet be handled and stacked without producing loose pieces?

Send the single label and the sheet plan in the same revision set so the layout can be assessed with the cut type and waste behaviour.
