Upper components can look like the same silhouette while carrying different stitch, lace or reinforcement references on the inside and outside faces. That makes visual mirroring alone an unsafe die check. The workflow below confirms component matching against the customer-approved drawing or sample; it does not provide footwear design or size grading.
Start with an approved component list
In an upper set, the vamp, inner quarter, outer quarter, tongue, eye-stay, collar and reinforcement must not all be called by one generic name. The approved list gives every component its name, model code, size, quantity and left-right status on its own line. When the drawing mark and the die identity come from the same source, confusion becomes visible before cutting begins.
The list does more than count components. Even where geometry is shared across two faces, the leather face, stitch note or direction arrow may differ. Leaving that difference under one general “upper” label risks treating the wrong component as the right one during production.
- Use one unique name or code for each component.
- Carry left, right, inside and outside details from the drawing into the list unchanged.
- Use quantity to distinguish a single part from a paired requirement.
Check the left-right pair in the original viewing direction
Right and left parts are often mirrored, but a component that looks copied at first glance may differ through an inside lace detail, logo, stitch line or reinforcement. During the check, keep the drawing in the viewing direction in which it was approved, then compare the left-right mark on the die against that reference.
“We will mirror it onto the die” is not a control method for styles with inside and outside details. Before production, the approved file and sample should state whether the required pair needs separate dies or a two-direction arrangement on one die.
- Check left-right marks without changing the approved viewing direction.
- Do not assume automatic mirroring for details on the inside face.
- Confirm the pair arrangement with both the file and the physical sample.
Separate inside and outside components with direction and face information
On natural or synthetic leather, component direction, face orientation and stretch axis influence how the operator positions the material. A direction arrow on the die does not create a design decision; it makes the customer-approved axis visible during cutting. Separate codes, readable direction marks and, where needed, face notes belong in the same check chain for inside and outside components.
Even with correct geometry, a component cut from the wrong face or in the wrong direction can become a matching problem at the next assembly stage. The purpose of the check is to catch that risk before production, not to make new decisions about material, footwear last or stitch design.
- The direction arrow makes the approved placement axis visible.
- Inside and outside components are not merged under the same name.
- Face information and critical notches are checked with the component identity.
Keep a short matching record before the first cut
The production check does not need a complicated form: model code, revision, size, component name, left-right/inside-outside mark and checker can sit on one line. The first cut pair is reviewed side by side against those lines. If it does not match, return to the file and die marks rather than moving into the batch.
The record also leaves a trace for a later revision. When a name changes, a notch moves or the paired quantity is updated, old and new information do not get mixed. The die set is then managed not only as a shape, but as a carrier of approved production information.
- The record includes model, revision, size and component identity.
- Review the first-cut left-right pair side by side.
- When there is a mismatch, reopen the approved source before series cutting.
Details to clarify for a quote
Assessment is more direct when the approved file, component identity and cutting expectation are shared together.
