An internal hole or window in a gasket can look like a small detail from the outside. But when the piece left inside does not release from the sheet after cutting, the centre dimension is not always the problem. For a gasket cutting die, inner-waste behaviour is assessed by reading the inner-contour shape, nearby lines, the actual material sample and the post-cut release arrangement together.
Separate inner waste from a measurement error first
When an inner piece remains in place, the first question should not be “is the hole in the right place?” Hole location, releasing the inner contour from the sheet and releasing the finished part along its outer contour are different checks. The same drawing can show different release behaviour with a different material or sheet condition.
For that reason, review the number and shape of internal openings, their distance from the outer contour and the area between nearby pieces separately. A hole with a verified dimensional reference is not yet complete from a production standpoint until its surrounding waste layout is understood.
- Check hole position and inner-piece release as separate items.
- Record the distance from the inner contour to the outer edge and neighbouring openings.
- Assess multiple internal openings as one arrangement, not as isolated holes.
The inner contour also tells where the waste will go
Round, angular, narrow and long internal openings do not follow the same path after cutting. The technical drawing should distinguish the inner line to be cut, the window that remains open and marks that are reference-only. Ambiguous lines create unnecessary interpretation about which piece is the product and which is waste.
Sharp turns in the inner contour or areas that come close together should be addressed with notes. The aim is not a contour that merely looks good on a drawing; it is to make the release of the approved part’s inner waste predictable in the real cutting flow.

- Mark narrow bridges and close contours clearly in the drawing.
- The file should make it unambiguous whether the inner piece is product or waste.
A material sample and a release note are both necessary
The word “gasket” alone does not describe cutting behaviour. For quoting and trial work, share a real sample of the specified flat-sheet material, its thickness and the direction that will be used in production. That keeps the assessment of inner waste tied to the approved input instead of a general material assumption.
The expected release approach should also be stated in the drawing or brief: should the inner piece separate fully, should it remain temporarily connected to the product, or will it be removed in a later step? This decision is independent of dimensional control, but equally important to product flow.
- Include the actual sheet sample and material direction with the file.
- State the expected condition of the inner piece after cutting.
- Do not treat an old sample and the current material as identical; note changes.
The trial result is the reference for the next order
When inner waste catches, looking only at the die is an incomplete diagnosis. First record whether it repeats at the same location, how many internal openings show it and which sheet and direction were used. This record helps separate a geometric issue from one caused by material or cutting flow.
Keep the file name, revision, material note and critical internal contours with the approved trial result. Then the phrase “the same gasket” has a clear reference for a repeat order, and a new sheet, revision or inner-opening request can be compared with the earlier record.
