In a sheet-fed flatbed steel-rule die, a label cut line carries the designed shape into the laser-cut channel and bent steel rule. In a custom label file, the visual character and manufacturable geometry meet on the same contour.
Build one closed vector cutting path
The die line is built as one closed centreline vector path. Its start and end nodes meet, duplicate paths are removed and unnecessary nodes are cleaned. Stroke weight makes the line visible on screen, while the vector path carries the production dimension.
Inspect a contour traced from a raster image at close range. Cleaning tiny zigzags and excessive nodes gives the steel rule smoother bends and clearer joints.
Judge corners and narrow necks against physical rule geometry
Rule body thickness, steel properties, notching and the bending method define how tightly physical steel rule can turn. The label material then shapes how the chosen contour behaves during cutting. Very short notches, narrow necks and repeated small turns are dimensioned with both factors in view.
Reducing nodes and using flowing radii keeps the visual character while creating a cleaner cutting path. When a sharp point is essential, mark it as a design requirement and agree the final turn with the die maker.
Keep print bleed and safe area separate from the cut line
The cutting path, print bleed and content safe area are three different layers. The converter defines bleed from the printing condition, and the die maker produces the approved contour. This keeps each production responsibility clear.
A colour field extended beyond the cut line gives register movement room. Barcodes, serial numbers and regulated copy sit within a controlled safe area. Clear layer names and distinct colours guide the correct line into production.
Approve the master label before repeating positions
Create one master contour, approve its dimensions, corners and artwork relationship, then repeat it across the sheet. This gives every position the same geometry and current edit.
When positions are repeated, consider label spacing, waste path, feed direction and usable sheet area together. An efficient layout balances label count with sheet handling and waste removal after cutting.
Close revisions with dimensions and a version line
Add job code, dimensions and revision date to the filename or approval line. Keeping the current PDF or AI file under one clear version name directs production to the approved source.
