In a sheet-fed flatbed steel-rule die, a position-specific label cutting fault repeats at the same layout location. Recording an uncut corner, difficult release, liner cutting or scoring against the sheet feed direction helps compare local rule, press, cutting surface and material effects.
Mark the fault location and feed direction
Draw a feed-direction arrow on the faulty sheet. Number positions by row and column, then circle the point with an uncut corner, difficult release or liner score. A shared orientation links the sheet defect directly to the die photograph.
Mark consecutive production sheets in the same way. This separates an isolated piece of debris from a repeating pattern and makes the observed production result comparable.
A fault at the same position points toward the die side
If the symptom returns to the same corner of the same position, inspect the local rule, joint and die seating. Photograph the full die and the marked area in the same orientation so the sheet position maps directly to the contour.
This pattern makes the die side a strong candidate. A local mark on the cutting surface and the seating condition are checked at the same position. Keep the location fixed while comparing other variables one at a time.
A moving fault opens the press and material branches
If the defect appears at the top left on one sheet and elsewhere on the next, expand the review to pressure distribution, cutting-surface cleanliness, sheet feed and material consistency.
Record a new roll or sheet batch, different liner or lamination change. When the result changes with the material while the die stays the same, review facestock, adhesive and liner as one construction.
Record liner cutting or scoring separately from an incomplete cut
An incomplete cut and liner cutting or scoring can be opposite symptoms. One describes facestock release; the other describes the condition of the carrier. Recording them separately gives the pressure and rule review a clearer starting point.
Write one symptom for each position: uncut corner, difficult release, liner score, rough edge or adhesive movement. Side lighting helps reveal a fine liner mark, and a coloured annotation can sit beside the defect.
Build a one-variable diagnostic record
Changing pressure, material and die at the same time hides which intervention affected the result. Record the baseline, change one variable, then complete the same position map again.
- Same position, same symptom: inspect the local die, seating and cutting surface.
- Position moves: compare pressure distribution, feed and material batch.
- Starts with a material change: open the facestock, adhesive, liner and lamination record.
- Symptom changes: evaluate an incomplete cut separately from liner cutting or scoring.
